We run a small cattle, sheep and mixed cropping farm. We currently have 50 head of white Shorthorn cattle and 350 Merino Ewes. We grow wheat and barley crops in Winter and sorghum and dryland cotton in the Summer.
Biodiversity plays an important role in our production system here at Urella and we value our natural capital. We aren’t part of any official programs but we have a beautiful watercourse called Bunna Bunna that runs through our property, meaning we are unable to farm certain areas. These areas have been left to re-establish with natural vegetation, including River Red Gums, Coolabah trees, grasses, and legumes. These areas have a dual benefit: they provide natural habitat for native wildlife and beneficial insects, and the trees and vegetation help reduce the effects of the weather such as wind and erosion. We also practice rotational grazing in these areas.
